for me, prayer does a few things
first it helps me to relieve and express emotional pressure, both "positive" and "negative"
praise and gratitude are prayers too! i like to say "thank you for the fact that this awesome thing exists" as much as i can
second, it helps me to articulate whats going on: i dont consider prayer to be any big event, its just talking to "god" or "the universe" or maybe my own "higher self" about whatever it is that is important atm
by putting it into words, whoever hears them, sometimes i find that i feel a little bit better about it
last i think it helps me to affirm my belief, maybe faith, in the idea that i am connected to the Force
that we are all connected
that maybe there really is something "magical" in life, and maybe we can tap into it from time to time
