I know there are many people here who speak languages other than English. I am currently learning German and am in that weird in between stage where I know a fair bit but still not enough! I thought it would be good to have a place where us language learners can support each other, maybe ask questions about translations or just share good places to go for practice.
Recently I've been using duolingo.com.

(If you speak German and I just wrote rubbish please tell me!)

So any other language learners here?

It won't let me have a blank signature ...

My first language is Farsi, and then comes English and then French and Arabic... I really like learning more, but it's time consuming and my life isppretty busy at moment...

I'd be happy to help anyone... you know... provided that I can help in that language :-D

My mother tongue is German. I learned English and Latin in school with mediocre results and continue learning English mostly here.
Using a language is the best way to learn it, in my opinion. I can't teach a language but if you need someone to write to, you can send me a pm.

Your German paragraph is understandable but you got some verbs wrong or forgot them completely :)

Yes! I am in love with language learning. :) And I've definitely spoken to others in the community who are just as enthusiast about languages (or more!). Great thread, Edan.

Duolingo is fantastic for specific languages, and I have used it for Spanish and Italian on occasion. Unfortunately, the languages I enjoy studying most aren't heavily represented in mainstream learning software (Danish, Hawaiian, Afrikaans, etc.).

Mango Languages is fairly decent for slightly obscure languages, and if you are living in the U.S. the service is free through most public libraries (go to your library's website to see if it's available). However, I did notice when I was using Mango to review my Czech skills that the translations weren't always accurate, so I'd suggest using it as more of a supplemental tool.

You may find other good, free language learning tools at your local library as well. In addition to online software for language learning, you will most likely have access to Pimsleur CDs (incremental audio tutorials based on repetition), multimedia software (such as Talk Now/EuroTalk - that, while not amazing, are great for beginners), language books containing listening CDs (like the Teach Yourself series), and any number of grammar/vocabulary books and books written in the language(s) you're learning. Plus, many libraries now have language CDs available in MP3 format via their websites.

It's amazing what you will find with a simple web search too. There are excellent sites out there for just about any language - for all types of learners (visual, auditory, and so on). You shouldn't have to spend money to learn a language. In fact, I've found that most of the better known (and often excessively expensive) language tools out there seem to only work wonders for a select few.

In regard to my own language learning/practice, I've been immersed in Danish for the past 3 years. Along with taking classes once a week at a Scandinavian heritage museum, I've been spending a lot of time reading books in (very basic) Danish and watching Danish podcasts. If there are any Danish language learners in the community that would like to practice writing or speaking (or Danish speakers who would like to practice English), please feel free to PM me.

I'm a lover of languages, but I love how they work. I created my own language as a project one semester and then spent another semester project building it up to be more robust.

Currently trying to brush up on Spanish via Duolingo and German through Mango (I put the German on hold). I was conversational in Spanish for about a semester before my skills fell away when I stopped using it. My mom and I used to practice German when I was a little kid (~6 or 7), she was able to read the Bible in German and whatnot, but I never attained that level of comprehension.

That sounds great, I've always been intrigued by created languages. Did you base it on any particular language or did you start completely from scratch?

I borrowed concepts and grammatical rules from Latin and a few other languages within the Romance languages family, but the vocabulary and alphabet were completely my own.

I've been using Duolingo too.

I was quite good with French and German when I was at school but nearly 8 years have passed since then so I really am pretty rusty. I've done a bit of German on Duolingo but I'm mainly concentrating on French at the moment. However, it's going...slooowly...as I seem to be incapable of remembering to do it on a regular basis. :(
