hello, was given the idea to start a thread for those of us who suffer, deal, or in some strange way enjoy insomnia. this is a place to gripe, discuss, and if needed support those with this problem.

ok i got one for you: what if you can go to sleep fine but wake up at absurd hours unable to go back to sleep? i take ambien (only on occassion), but it does nothing for this, and the extended release version was not covered by my insurance.

go.

but wake up at absurd hours unable to go back to sleep

It happens, and sometimes several Xs a week.

It's a good time for me to do QiGong breathing exercises. It helps me relax.

I know, I know, I'm a nut case but I also will use this awake time to meditate and pray. :)

Eventually my mind relaxes and clears then I fall back to sleep...30 min before the alarm goes off.

I have insomnia too. I've just given up on the whole fictional notion that everyone on the planet must sleep 8 hrs continuously and be at work 12 hrs and blah blah. Now I just roll with it. I have night activities and day activities; I do whichever one suits the time when I'm conscious.

I'm also not a morning person in my current timezone but I am when on the other side of the planet. If you HAVE to go to work and can't sleep you can lie in bed and rest anyway while calming your thoughts and not moving your body. You get up feeling refreshed after just a couple hours and can go the whole day.

Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts.

Cant believe Im actually about to say this :P But I 100% agree. My experience of insomnia used to be of the panicked "Whyyyyyy cant i sleep!!!" variety that left me feeling like a zombie. I tried ambien too. Didnt help. But the more I worried about the insomnia, the more I talked and thought about it as a problem and the greater my anxiety became. Until it became apparent that around 30min before I was hoping to go to bed my body started showing major signs of stress which meant I was gearing up for the fight against insomnia. Not very condusive to me being able to relax and sleep!

Now days I accept that my natural rythmns include often being awake at night. Im more creative at night. Im surprisingly productive. I honestly do see it as having more hours in which to live. But I have routines to help ensure I get at least enough sleep during the week days to be functional at work and I take valerian as a suppliment to help keep that routine in place.

I still have nights where I dont sleep. But I try never to say "I cant sleep", I say "Im not ready to sleep". If it feels like I have another option then I dont stress about it.

I used to suffer as well...

After much self exploration (of the mental kind..;)), I determined I too do not require 8 hours of sleep...

Week nights, I get around 5-6 hours, and on weekends, I sleep a little longer and get the 8-9 hours....

Tonight, I took a 45 minute nap....

It all depends....:)

As we are affected by stimuli differently, sleep, would be no different...

Quote stats on all the creative people, famous people, studies from universities....

It boils down to we each have different requirements..

I wish I could sleep less...:)

I'd get more stuff done...;)

it's not unusual for me to get maybe three hours of sleep a night. im used to that. :)

the only time it really bothers me is like lately, when my stress lvl is so high, i'm lucky to et one hour in a 24 hour period. so far the past week has been like that. it leaves you feeling kinda loopy on some days. :S

i meditate and it helps to feel a little refreshed, but it only lasts so long.
