Thank you a lot; did actually expect more negative critique since its breaking the traditional 2d design, but well, seeing it, i just couldn't stand :D
@Nameless: I opened up the CAD program i'm working with, put the original symbol as backdrop and modeled a 2d shape based on it. then extruded it and added lots of bevels to get the detail. also, i made the material have a scratch metal texture available from the net and used the same texture as its specularity channel. the actual image was rendered with a volumetric spotlight shining from the other side through the holes and a backdrop based on a procedural texture for random dots - stars.
