Greetings Brothers and Sisters in the Force,
I reviewed the wellness section of this site and was unable to find something related to the practice of Kata. As part of my martial arts training in Xin-Do I will need to create a 30 move kata that demonstrates explosive power, focus, balance, speed, and practicality in order to pass my Purple belt test.
Any assistance or links that assist me in creating a balanced personal Kata is deeply appreciated.
In the future I hope this post will also become a place where Jedi who practice martial arts can post information regarding the practice of Katas from different styles, while offering assistance to other Jedi's who wish to take on this beneficial martial art practice.
Thank you Brothers and Sisters for your assistance, and may the force be with you always.

I don't mean to sound insulting but doesn't that defeat the point of showing your understanding and knowledge of kata? Not to mention that it is meant to be, as you say, 'personal'?
I would however say that you should think over the kata you have learned. Which moves do you think are especially prominent in them, what is fast and powerful? Slow and precise?
Think over the moves you've already learned, then just put them in an order and keep changing that order until they 'flow' effectively
That's my advice

Do you have a link to your school?

They are at: Kmartialarts.net.
Clearification of intent:
While I understand that a kata is meant to be a personal thing, I am unfamiliar with the practice and having searched online, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by information ( 100s of martial art systems in the world each with their own versions or definitions of Kata, some of which have 100 different forms). Asking for advice, assistance, or opinions from others who have more knowledge on martial arts or perhaps have even done this themselves isn't going against the purpose of what I feel a Kata is.
I will not just copy a kata from a different style, that will only defeat the purpose of the belt rank assignment, but by seeing what other practioniers view of as good katas I will be better informed in creating my own.
I am not asking for someone to create one for me, I am simply asking for guidance or advice in creating my own. While also hopefully allowing for others on this site who wish to learn more about this, to have a place to.

I have since finished my Kata; ended up with two variation; 6 moves each; done in a: A-B-A-B-A pattern. I've named it "Kensoku No Michi" as a nod to my tae kwon do ("fist foot way"), And may record a video of it and post a link if anyone is interested in seeing the finished product of months of work.
This is NOT MARKETING but in case anyone is curious about my dojo; their website is kmartialarts.net; the style is "xin-do"(pronunced 'Sheen-do") comes from "Woo ying do"/"woo ying mung", and has ties to Bruce Lee's Jeet Koon Do.
We are located in Milwaukee, OR.

Greetings Mitpen San
Well done in finding your way to do your Kata my friend. However I am some what confused that your art form appears to be from either korean or Chinese origin yet you use some Japanese terms. Not that this is a an issue . I would have assumed that you would have structured Kata to learn in your given syllabus.
Anyway good luck in your training

I would be very in terested in seeing your Kata. I like studying other schools, techniques and styles. I find that the more I learn about others, the better I understand my own.
And, maybe it would be something I'd like to "try on for size?"
I've never made my own Kata before... would you care to share how you came up with your?

wescli wardest! The goal of kata as far as Xin-Tao and the philosophy of Jerry Keeler is to create a mock fight against invisible opponents. The rank represents the half way point to 1st degree black belt and is a break from the rigorous training set-work and instead allows the student to express themselves. I will be recording my kata in the near future as well as some newer weapon variation and a whole other series of personally created katas that I will use in my self defense programs (kacrijitsu) (*these new series WILL be used as training tools as well as allowing my students to learn to chain together attacks and express themselves; I hope to someday have a demo team and these katas will be apart of their program)
these will all be posted either on youtube or on vimeo as sort of a online training diary. once posted I will also post a link in my journal (*If that'd be appropriate) so others curious is Xin-tao, Kacrijitsu, or just curious about what I've been doing (*other then work and the IP) can see.
Hope all who see will enjoy and any brother or sister Jedi interested can have a few free lessons if interested in the style. (* and if they live near Milwaukee Oregon where I teach)
