Since this is a new position, not yet having a description in the FAQ (forthcoming) to which to refer, the following is a brief explanation of the responsibilities of this Office and why it has been convened :
- A centralised communications channel for everyone - of course you can still speak to any one of us personally also, but business that we need to be taking care of in an organised manner - that needs to go through Adder's office (so that it doesn't get lost, mainly).
- Making announcements - as you all may have seen, it will now be the Secretary to the Council who announces to the TotJO Community news of Grade/Rank Promotions, Apprenticeships - as well as any other information that needs to be distributed.
- Enforcing voting rules/timetables for discussions (in the Council Chambers) - you've heard it said that "Council is slow, be patient ..." Well, there is also a reason for that. One may be inclined to think that we only have a decision to take on your thing when actually there may be 15 discussions going on in Council at once with seven of us to pay attention to them. To give an illustration of what that might look like : go to Recent Posts - scroll down half the page. That is the number of active discussions going on in the Council, issues upon which we need to reflect, discuss and take some sort of responsible decision about for you. That as well as being sort of responsible in our lives outside of the TotJO as well. The Secretary to the Council will bring some order to that so that the Council can function in a more timely manner.
- Scheduling - for events which require "a Councillor" : knighthood interviews/ceremonies mainly.
We're very grateful to Adder for accepting to take on this Herculean task of keeping us on track with things, and have opened several avenues of communications to him. We're letting him organise his tasks as he finds appropriate, so he can communicate to you himself once that is decided how you can contact him about what. Like I said before, this is a new position and will take some time to get accustomed to, so please don't assail Adder with questions that you can get the answers to from any Knight/Clergy member or the FAQ.
Please do however wish him well in the execution of his new responsibilities ...
May the Force be with you, Adder !

First question, what exactly does that mean Alex? What kind of business?

That just means anything that anyone wants to bring before Council. Even for US. Even when we, Councillors, make a thread in Chambers, we'll shoot a message to Adder so that he has another record of it. In many ways, the Council discussion threads look very much like all the other ones. If you go off and do something for a few hours and you notice that your thread is half-way down the page. Now, take that to the next level ... wait a few days. Result, the discussion is derailed and the consideration is forgotten ... We need to avoid that.
What Adder is going to be doing is keeping Council discussions current, receiving "official" messages for Council and making "official" statements. Like I said, anyone is still very welcome to talk to any of us personally - but if we go making a suggestion or such, the response would be quite likely : "send a message to Adder." It is something that we are going to have to get used to also. This is not to avoid the matter, this is precisely to make sure that it doesn't get lost in the shuffle.
Does that clear things up ?
