Maybe to see the forest rather than the trees is to include the trees? versus rather than the trees?

There sure is !

(and I'm glad to see someone admit the "instinct" again in relation to human beings -- anti-Darwinism objected so strongly that we started using "drives", a mechanistic term)

Actually, Darwin didn't do much of what he gets blamed for ... He was a scientist with an avid curiosity, but he was also a moralist (not to be confused with "moraliser") who did not just lump us in with a bunch of animals even if discovering that our species originated in a quite similar way with all the others. Herbert Spencer was the architect of much of that rubbish that gets called "Darwinism" even nowadays ...

There is a book that you may enjoy -- the author is a delightful little old lady from Newcastle (who has a biting wit !), Mary Midgley. The book is called "Are You an Illusion ?" :cheer:

It is a fascinating bit of writing ...

Does she laugh at the impractical side of metaphysical discourse?
Like when one recognizes what an illusion means then dismisses unwanted experiences or experience that the one can't explain as "just an illusion anyway" LOL to the point there is no meaningful relation with anyone?

Perhaps there is an example of forest and trees here . . lol
