A Basket of Eggs -- A Story of Us

There was a young man who desired a basket full of eggs. Yet, he had no basket. And he had no eggs. He knew no basketweavers nor farmers, but his heart was set on a basket overflowing with eggs. So, he went to his friends to ask their advice.

"I would like a basket of eggs! It would be lovely, but I don't know where to start. Can you please help me?"

Some of them said "You must get a basket first. It is no good having eggs if you have no basket, for you'll have nothing to put your eggs in and they'll all roll away!"

Some of them said "You must gather the eggs first. What use is the basket with no eggs to put in it? You may not even find enough eggs to fill the basket, so you'll have wasted your money!"

Some of them said "A basket of eggs is a foolish notion. No one needs so many eggs that they require a basket to store them in. It's foolish, and I'll have no part in your nonsense."

And some remained quiet, for though they knew where to get eggs, and some of them sold baskets, they didn't think it was their place to prove the others wrong, for the opinions of the others were founded in their own experiences with farmers and basket-weavers, and it was no one's place to question their beliefs.

In this way, everyone thought they were helping the boy who wanted the basket of eggs, but in truth, the boy walked away with no basket, no eggs, and a heavy heart. His basket of eggs now seemed an impossible dream.

I appreciate the sermon... Yet... I find it...
Depressingly critical... What is the exact point of this sermon? Perhaps I forgot the general purpose and just of a sermon...
What did the boy offer for the eggs or basket?
No trade?...

Perhaps I forgot the general purpose and just of a sermon...
What did the boy offer for the eggs or basket?
No trade? Why? Only looking for a free hand out?
I think of desire and the suffering from it. What Buddha taught...
Nice story, I do not think it ends there though...

I get the message that the inaction of some can influence the world for the worse, no matter the scale, and that
there is also a time to act with compassion to better the world.

The point is actually rather simple. The basket camp and the eggs camp and the none camp had some strong beliefs and tried to help the boy in accordance with their conscience. Those however who could actually be of use to him kept quiet because they felt that they shouldn't call anyone on being wrong. It goes to illustrate a problem often found in this place: Everybody feels that everybody else is so entitled to what they think that nobody should ever argue over it with anybody. And that while serves a status quo, doesn't preserve anything worth having, never mind all the newcomers who seek help and won't find any.

What "camp" am I under? LOL This is not my story, if this is a story of us, it includes me, all we got is us... I speak for myself, only... When I seek, I find...
I call people out on a consistent basis as much as possible... I want to know...

I understood the point behind this sermon, and while I think it is a valid one, I interpreted it differently to its intention.

I see the story of many people who get caught up in the continuous search for an answer as to where to get a basket with eggs, but never get round to actually taking action on any of the suggestions.

Buy a basket, or buy some eggs. Neither is the "complete" answer of "basket of eggs" that you're looking for, but either is a good deal further along than nothing.

This may sound a little off the normal way of viewing it,
but to me the story was an example of how too much tolerance and flexibility is as dangerous as too little tolerance and flexibility.
So you had the camp that said it was foolishness because the boy must gather the eggs, otherwise the basket would be useless,
the others said that the eggs would be too much for the boy if he didn't have the basket first.
The 3rd camp, the one with the actual help kept quiet, not wanting to upset the others.
This, in a way, reminds me of why I posted the question of the Jedi and the Sith a while back.
I know for instance that organizations like TOTJO are born of an idea for tolerance;
not only that most of us have some connection with the Force, but also to create an environment where TOTJO doesn't simply become another "Us Vs. them" argument.
(For an example of said argument, pick any 2 traditional religions--traditional meaning mainstream.)
At any rate,
so, we created this place where Pagans, Abrahamic followers and all kind of other religious people coexist, agreeing on the one principle and that is the existence of the Force and the corresponding temple doctrine.
However, the greatest risk to something like that is not that we become too intolerant, but rather, that we become too tolerant; for example, of people who start writing along the lines of the SA under the excuse that everyone has a right to their opinion.
I'm not saying we don't; we do, but I think the point of the whole story was to point out that no matter what we think, whether this be with people or organizations, there comes a point where we have to stand up and define ourselves, whether we hurt or anger those around us or not.
This is not about such-and-such people, or group of people being somehow evil, or wrong; we can't define what they wish to think, but rather to say we don't believe or stand for this kind of behavior.
Sometimes, setting rules and limits is as good as it is not to have them in others.

Good story, raising some interesting points.

Our paths are our own. It can be a hard lesson to learn, that no-one can tell you exactly which direction to travel in to achieve your goals, but it's an essential one to learn, and continue learning through life. The best lessons are the ones that make us aware of this responsibility, that free us and equip us with the tools to make up our own minds.

With a little thought, one can discard the notion of collecting eggs before having a basket to put them in. We must plan, prepare, contemplate. We may learn to weave, and to locate chickens, or we may simply raise a little money to buy what we need. I hope after a night's contemplation, the boy returned the next day, bought a basket and some eggs, and felt proud that with thought he rose above the confusion which surrounded him and his goal.

We don't have to reveal our motivations and it doesn't matter that they can appear "silly" to others, so long as they're meaningful to us. We can take small steps to achieve our larger goals. We can learn the skills to be self-reliant, ask for help and pick only what's useful, and not give up in the face of adversity.

I believe these lessons are also part of our story.

Help me to understand...
If this is a story of 'us'...
when one here sees it differently, is it really a story of 'us'?
I am included in 'us'. I am here...
There is no 'us' without first including self.
So if I am not...
