I was on holiday this week and decided to go visit Birmingham Pride with my partner. For those that don't know, it's the UK's largest LGBT Pride event, with a parade through the City Centre and a designated area for partying and celebration over two days. It was a chance for me and my partner to be “out and proud” in public – our hometown isn't the most accepting of places and we often find ourselves having to restrict our behaviour for fear of reprisals. Now I'm not saying that I'm the kind of person to want to scream through the streets waving a rainbow flag every day, but this was a nice opportunity to not have to worry about how we would be treated in public.

 

Such opportunities for community spirit might be few and far between these days. I remember growing up in this town and not knowing anyone with a similar sexual orientation until I met my first partner aged 18. Even though I had many friends and was in a town with a hundred thousand other people around me, I still felt the acute loneliness of being “lost in a crowd”.

 

These feelings resurface from time to time and the highs from my holiday were met by the lows of returning to “normality”. It's difficult to understand the depths of despair until you have experienced them for yourself, but it's no understatement to say that in times of depression, everything seems dark. Even on a sunny day, there seems to be blackness all around and you feel totally disconnected from the rest of the world, unable even to cry out for help.

 

In these moments, it's difficult to be aware of a sense of community, of belonging to a group that appreciates and supports you, despite (or perhaps even because of) what you are going through. The Temple here is one such place though. We strive to ensure that this site is free from prejudice and our Clergy are dedicated to providing an understanding, compassionate ear in times of need. But even then, there are times when no-one is available online, so what can you do then?

 

Depression and other related conditions are readily described by a lot of medical professionals (and by society in general) as a “mental illness”. Technically speaking, this is the case. But that description hardly improves the mood of anyone suffering from such a state of mind! These are emotions and therefore fulfil the function of all emotions: to allow us to be aware of something that requires our attention.

 

Situations or events stimulate a wide variety of emotional responses and to limit these responses is to limit our own experience as living beings. As Jedi, we dedicate ourselves to understanding our emotions and why they occur, so that we can use those responses in an appropriate and useful way rather than be ruled by them. This is easier to do when we feel more balanced and centered and any solutions are readily considered when we are feeling in cheerier spirits but how about those times when we feel alone and despairing of any hope?

 

If you ever feel unable to reach out for help, please know that you are never alone. Even when you are disconnected from family, friends, or potential sources of comfort, the Force is always with you. Sometimes, the only solution is to do nothing, to weather the storm and place your faith in the Force to deliver you to a calmer state of mind, a safe haven from the turbulence of a troubled spirit.

 

In the spirit of mutual support, I would like you to visit the following link and to reflect on the meaning of the content. It is a good idea to research a list of various helplines in your area, in case a friend needs them. You also never know when you might need them yourself. The Clergy here at TOTJO are always willing to help where we can and those that are ordained (holding the positions of Deacon, Priest or Bishop) are also able to offer confidential advice in the form of a “confessional”.

Being able to even go to the pride event in your hometown shows your strength of character. I'm sorry you often feel overcome by such darkness which we call 'normality.' It's not very fair at all. It's very reassuring to know that people in this temple are so open minded, and that we each have someone to turn to in our most desperate times, as well as the Force or course. thank you for the sermon, and may the Force be with you.

The lows can feel so much lower after experiencing such an enlightening high. The Temple has a safe feeling to it and there is always someone around to give a hand up and a virtual hug. This song brings tears to my eyes everytime..thou gh I do have a guilty preference to Elvis' version :-)

I only wish that there was enough tolerance in my home town to have a Pride event - we tried one a few years ago and all we got was abuse. There weren't that many of us and the Police weren't even interested in protecting us so we had to abandon it. I had to travel to the other end of the country to enjoy this one!

I always advise people that if they are able to change something that doesn't resonate with their being, then do so. So I've already laid plans to move next year :)

    • again, as I have stated in my own biblical thread, the Bible is a dusty old abstract Tome, potentially beautiful and lifechanging, but hardly literally true, in the west with the KJV and NIV atrocities to the translations ( here's to Augustine *raises glass*, oh and Calvin ( who gave his best friend an excruciating death of living incineration)) we can't really say much on the Bible, St Ignatius of Antioch has been metaphorically crucified ( get it?) by protestants for saying the NT is better than OT because the NT has the gospel, life of Christ and his teachings, the core of Christianity.

    • trying to seperate myself from the previous frustration of impatience that I had when I posted the original post here, the bible is mainly a story book (Old testament), a book with great poetry and symbolism, with beautiful stories and lessons to be learnt, when it isn't a story, it is an abstract form of philosophy or meaning that is supposed to teach you a lesson every time you read it. I am not arguing against the bible, but like philosophy, I was arguing against the reactions of: - Claiming the Bible is pure divine text ( sometimes the claim of "only divine text") - Taking every single word of the Bible as truth or literal meaning both reactions don't hold true to the original meaning or motivation of the Bible.

    • Would this be equated to Campbell's use of duality and the fact that it is an illusion. Only when you realize there is no duality can you understand where each side originated and come to an understanding of it. Of course you can't completely separate yourself from the Good and the Bad and learn to see them as coming from one thing but you can try your best to understand it. In a sense it is naivety, yet understanding.

It could make more sense for purple to represent conflict as it does actual show a higher energy state. So then going all Star Wars (sorry Zenchi) red blades could represent a call for victims to sacrifice on the Sith blade, while blue a call to conflict so it can be settled best by the Jedi way together with green as protective and harmonious midpoint. In which case a color Force dichotomy could be passion/red/giving of oneself to a cause, versus conflict/purple/exhausting resources through competition for a cause. It also aligns well with blood, red is fresh and oxygenated ready for use, while purple is rare and causes tension around it. One of the things I like about dichotomies is that by having two points they automatically create a midpoint. So in this regard I feel like the color version of grey might not be purple like I first thought, but instead green!

    • LOL ... :cheer: Last week it was Jestor covering the soap box with controvery. Now look ... All things, even equality, considered, you're right, Wescli. And that was sort of what I had "hoped" to get to by this. It isn't clear as to whether or not we're not really all equals, for the story of the carreer in baseball aspirations doesn't imply that shortstop or first baseman could programme a robot to tear up a hill ... We are not all equal in all domains ; that is an evidence. It is unsure whether we have equal potential even in all domains. I'm personally not much of a determinist, but do feel that we have dispositions which render us better at some things than at others. Still ... And S - you are on to something there about the ones who are disappointed when things turn out better. Here in France, we are always listening to the whinings of those who are all salty about things not living down to their expectations. :dry: And if one thinks well about it, the Schopenhauerian toad would definitely make ones day better. Toad skin secretes a sort of tryptamine, bufotenin, which acts as a sort of neurotransmitter that is the same or similar as found in some mushrooms and plants. So, by swallowing a toad for breakfast - one would be flying high nicely for a good part of the day. :woohoo: It is this which is reputed to have given us all the faerie tales about princesses kissing toads and they miraculously turn into princely lovers ... :huh:
