Teaching and leading are service. If they're not acts of service, then someone is doing them wrong.

I think the terms are being used in reference to the motivation, not the outcome.... that is how I interpreted it and agree the focus should not be to teach (assimilate) or lead (control), but to serve (support). If by doing that the outcome is learning (teaching) and direction (leadership), then that is great, but not what the author meant... I think?

Thank you, Adder.
That's pretty much where I was going with it, yes.

Respectfully, I think you misunderstand. My motive is compassion, not control. I am not advocating leadership or control. I am not saying that we should dictate to people, but rather be there for them to look to. Much of what you said is exactly how I see it. We should not lead. We should not teach. We should serve. We serve where our service is welcome, and not where we are not invited. Just because I didn't include those things in my post doesn't mean I don't believe them to be true. I can't very well put all my thoughts into one post. My only amendment to what you said would be, "We should not lead, except by example. We should not teach, except for those who wish to learn." I think you could be extrapolating information from my words based on preconceived notions. I'm extrapolating that based on your use of a Greenleaf quote. I am not unfamiliar with his work. Did you know that his inspiration for the Servant Leader came from a story in which the servant turned out to be the leader all along? Not just in a metaphorical sense, but he was actually the benefactor for a journey posing as a servant? I'm sure you did. Not many people cite Greenleaf on internet forums so I think it's safe to say you know your source. Anyway, just because I'm advocating that we start to focus on what we can accomplish as a group and not simply as individuals doesn't mean I want us to become a huge institution that is not conducive to Servant Leadership. The Ten Characteristics of listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and building community don't have to be sacrificed.
As for training, a very slow boil is an accurate metaphor and that is how it should be. To what temperature though is more what I was getting at.
I see no reason why we should disagree, peacefully or otherwise.

I never doubted your intentions at all. I get the impression you sincerely want people to be happy and secure. Me too.
I don't think we disagree on too much. Certainly, if someone asks to learn, why not teach. That's why we're all here, right?
Very glad you've read Robert Greenleaf.
My thoughts often move to the unintended consequences. One must be very careful with intent and impact.
I'm really glad you're giving this such sincere effort, Oneiros. You clearly care very much. The community is better for your presence.

Well I do believe I've made a friend
Unintended consequences: the pitfall of nearly every action and precisely why I zeroed in on your metaphor of a very slow boil. With proper time and application of energy devoted to an action, unintended consequences can be minimized to the most manageable amount possible.
I am always grateful when people bring up unintended consequences because it keeps others from just jumping on a bandwagon and riding it off a cliff.
So, with caution in mind, do you see the Jedi serving in a larger capacity? If so, what does that look like to you? In an ideal situation, what practical steps do we take to get there?
Finally, I very appreciate your kind words. They mean a lot to someone who is just starting his path here.

I can agree that we need training. My personal beliefs require it.
But if we need a symbol we just need to wear our lightsabers.
Internationally recognized.
I just wouldn't suggest it yet. We're not ready.

I wear mine anytime I'm somewhere where people won't freak out at the sight of one. So usually comic book conventions and things like that. Baby steps.

I wear the belt clip at all times, but save the saber itself for special occasions.

When I choose to wear/carry my lightsaber no one freaks out or geeks out or says anything that may incur my beating them down with it :woohoo:
Should the perspective of a sith have value in totjo?....yes, the more perspectives we have the more capable we become and the more balanced our views become...
What is totjo?
A meeting place for like minded folks, a training site for aspiring jedi, and a site for spiritual support.
Like minded does not mean all of our views will be the same...just similar...
Not everyone needs to aspire to be or train to be jedi, but none should be excluded from it...

Warning: Spoiler!
There is passion, yet there is peace
Through passion I gain strength and knowledge
Through strength and knowledge I gain victory
Through victory I gain peace and harmony
Through peace and harmony my chains are broken
There is no death, there is the force and it shall free me
