One could say none; that these are only visual representations of the ideal of Squares. One could also say 'all squares', for each square shape is representative of all of square-kind.

I stopped counting at 11, though.

I've counted 15 squares so far...though it seems everytime I look I see another one. It'll be fun to learn the answer.

And I went by squares instead of rectangles too.

*Edit* 16...This is addicting!

I don't know the answer. The entire thing is a square - the single largest. The top left corner is a corner to a square as is the bottom right corner - the next two largest. There is a single square in the middle - the third largest. There are four squares running from the bottom left to the top right which are the fourth largest. It goes on from there ....

Are you people getting more than 11 using rectangles and/or assumed squares, too? Or am I just missing some of the explicit ones?

I get 16. Some of the squares are rotated so they have a diamond look (like in playing cards).

I'm reasonably certain it's 16. The 17 is coming from a tricky one that is easy to count twice. Printing it out and outlining the squares should settle this once and for all.

I found that there are sixteen regular quadrilaterals . They can be identified in to six categories.

Diagonal - 2
One by on squares - 6
Two by two squares - 4
Three by three squares - 1
Five by five squares - 2
Seven by seven (the entire square) - 1

On second thought...maybe there are only 16. That, or I was in some sort of heightened conscious state when I first looked. :silly:
