Do Jedi lead by design or is it just a case of

DO AS I SAY NOT AS I DO.....

Do as I Say? 30 Jul 2012 21:34 #68659

If a Jedi does not act the part, he is not a Jedi.

Jedi do not act. Jedi ARE!

Integrity is a high quality for the Jedi and well it is what it is.
May the force bless you with guidance, strength, love and light.

It all depends on the situation, like many other circumstances in life. Obviously, Jedi should teach others how to behave by behaving that very same way. For example, don't smoke - I won't smoke either.

However, in certain cases, the "do as I say and not as I do" rule has to happen. Of course, there has to be genuinely sincere intentions behind it.

For example, (although she is not a Jedi) my Mom is addicted to sugar. Like she is so addicted that she has eaten herself into type-2 diabetes. Nowadays, she still eats sweets - they're just sugar free. She can't control her addiction anymore, but she knows that it's a bad situation. Which is why she tells me not to eat too many sugared things. It's a helpful tip.

It's a bit of both isn't it? Nobody is completely perfect and does certain things that they shouldn't do. For instance, I'm a smoker but if I had kids I would still tell them not to smoke because it's a bad habit that kills you. In a way "do as I say, not as I do" can be a stronger argument. If you've experienced something then you're in a position to tell someone to not do it but if you haven't how can you justify what you are saying completley. When I was at school we had a former drug addict do a talk (effectively saying "don't do drugs) and he was quite effective because he clearly knew what he was talking about. If they had got some clean as a whistle, top button done up type to speak it would have been pointless.

Society pays the most attention to those who have been there and done it. It raises a classic question; is it better to be born great, or to start as nothing and earn your greatness one step at a time? It's like the celibate lecturing us on the dangers of sex. Theory is great but practice is necessary. Experience gives us a sense of what truly is happening, rather than what a book says is happening.

The same goes for workplace safety. The safety legislation in my country restricts idiotic things. For labourers, gloves MUST be worn at ALL times and weather conditions. Even though in the rain our gloves get a sheen of moisture and oil on them that makes gripping anything practically impossible.

One of the safety inspectors knows this and understands it when we take our gloves off during wet conditions. He fought the management and safety committee when I burnt my hand and wasn't wearing gloves. It had been pouring down with rain and I was threatened with having to pay my own hospital fees as well as face disciplinary action for violating a safety rule.

    • If we are all one mind, why do we not think like it? Why are our thoughts and such not in better sync? It's a big diverse mind with no limitations where anything and everything is possiblebut I do believe we have more in common than different Because we have "monkey mind', 'ego' or whatever.... Monkey mind is a challange :( So, if we step out one level, to observe our thoughts, then we are of two minds... If we can step out another level, which I can almost see, we can observe mind2 watching mind1, with mind3... different levels same mind Im working on getting mind3 to watch mind2... Because sometimes, mind2 should bepaying better attention to mind1... lol...
Can be confusing isn't it. That's part of the challange and joy of the mind. • IMPORTANT: DOCTRINE UPDATE (Last post by Mark Anjuu)
    • With regard to the Codes, the Orthodox version is perhaps more widely known (the "There is no...." version) but some of us prefer the other version because it acknowledges the presence and necessity of each item but demonstrates that it is not a hindrance to our development as Jedi. For example, "There is no emotion, there is peace" implies that Jedi do not have any emotions ever. We are not fictional Vulcans, we are human, and emotions are a vital response to the stimulus of our spirit. The version "Emotion, yet peace" acknowledges our emotions but implies that we treat them as signals and guidance to achieve peace and to not be at the mercy of our emotions. I could write a whole essay on this topic so perhaps it is more fitting to discuss it elsewhere! :D

    • Quote: It's as if there's some type of "attendance quota" that we all have to "meet". There isn't an attendance quota, right?  Not one for you to worry about ;) But when Teaching Masters are away for more than a week or two without letting anyone know, that's the same as if a teacher took a few weeks off school without telling anyone they weren't going to be coming in... And the same as in any walk of life, when people take on positions of responsibility they are making a commitment to being there to actually fulfil the role that they have agreed to do. So whilst no-one is taking a register and checking that attendance doesn't drop below a certain percentage, it is my duty to be here and, when that is not possible, to ensure that you guys know what's going on and when I'll be back! :)
    • Username and why we use them ? (Last post by soya)
    • I have used so many usernames, things relating to old gods, things from different myths, things from D&D and other games, even names that are just random gobblings of letters that seem to fit together, and are pronounceable in English. I've always wanted a different name, a different life. I never used my real name, because it isn't who I was, it was a name given by my father, because he wanted a little him, so he gave me his name, made me to learn his trade, and only allowed me to enjoy his enjoyments. I have been soya since the middle of 2006, a group of friends didn't like the name I had chosen for myself, so they got together and gave me a new name, more indicative of my personality. I still go by my real name in real life, I get asked if I made it up, or where it's from, what it means, why I changed my name (because it couldn't be something my parents gave me!), everything. I am currently attempting to take my name, make it me, really get people to go "Oh, you're ***?" and not speak about my father. In short, I use my username, because I do not feel a connection to my real name, but I'm trying to change that, and may change to my real name here, shortly, in the future.

    • Ah, Quote: “If Jediism seeks to strive towards the same principles followed by the fictional Jedi, it's also fair to infer that other definitional aspects stem from the same source...” I see where the confusion has come from. We are not fictional Jedi from the wonderful Star Wars movies, neither are we role playing. Jediism is not the same as that which is portrayed within the Star Wars Saga by George Lucas and Lucasfilm LTD. George Lucas' Jedi are fictional characters that exist within a literary and cinematic universe. As stated on this page. http://www.templeofthejediorder.org/

    • I have been a healer for years. For as long as I can remember I have sought to help people. As a child I wanted to be a storm chaser, a spy, a doctor and for a time a priest. After a car accident involving a family member. I vowed to find a way to learn to save lives. To happen apon those on the brink and have the skills and abilities needed to reach out and return them to this life. This was a childs dream. However, those are the ones that motivate us the most. I went through a program in my high school called OEC (Opportunities in Emergency Care), I was trained as an EMT in high school. I worked a few jobs as an EMT, even as a Medical Officer, but soon I started working at a Trauma Center. I have been here for 9 years, I still volunteer my time on some services. However, I have found that the people in the field and in the ER have colored my experiences. Given me a vision of life that at times can bring an indescribable amount of joy, and equally indescribable pain and at times fear. That is my light, courage in the face of fear. Brought forth by pure will, by conviction and by the knowledge that what I do may be thankless at times, but I watch the differences I make happen. That... That lets me sleep very well at night.

    • The Sith Academy! (Last post by Alaaric Jensen)
    • Yes RyuJin well said. I do believe that if they had any real power they would not be so open about themselves in the way that they are. They seem to allow their darkest secrets to unfold like a book. When they speak they do not sound confident. By all appearances they seem to be living out a fantasy but I never assume when I do not know. That is the best policy in my opinion. I am focusing my use of energy working and magic to heal. I want to create and not destroy. I believe that it is a waste of effort to use your abilities, or talents, whatever they may be, to hurt others. When I look at the philosophy of the Sith Academy, and then look at what my philosophy was before, I see that they are similar in essence, but they are both truly pointless. What is the purpose of domination? Conquest of that which already exists, to convert all of reality into your own image, it is a waste of time. What happens when, theoretically, all reality is under your control? Everything would conform with everything else. Everything would be the same but you are at a dead end. Where do you go from there? If you have nothing left to conquer or destroy then your motives have been exhausted. You no longer have a purpose. Creation however, is limitless, and there is no end to creating. All things that are created in this dimension must decay however, but more is created in place of what has departed, and I believe that most life reincarnates. Those who live only for domination or destruction lead an empty life. By remembering that emptiness I am inspired to keep struggling against my own temptations to fall back into that old life of self destruction.

    • May have nothing to do with homosexuality. 18 year old "going out" with a 15 year old is paedophilia: An adult engaging in sexual acts with a child (someone under 16). Some parents are going to be cool with it, gay or hetero, some aren't. Either way, if the law says it isn't cool, don't complain when you get caught. Not sure why they call it "battery" though ?

Always go with your gut. Once I learned to trust my intuition, instinct, gut, whatever you want to call it, I was able to become a much better medic. The ability to overcome the egos need to control instinct is a very helpful tool in your Jedi toolbox.

    • Part of the double-speak paradigm is hiding the underlying ideology and making slogans that nobody can disagree with because it doesn't mean anything. It's like "support our troops"... yeah everyone supports our troops... try saying "support our war" and see what happens.
