It would be a very uncomfortable relationship, no? As it is a "casual" one I can't imagine that it would end in happiness for either party. Personally, I have different personalities in different situations. When I'm working I'll behave in one way, with friends in another way, with my parents in another and so on. If you enter a relationship with this person, at least if you are the same as me, you will be entangling two different parts of your life and when that happens to me it makes me feel quite uncomfortable. However, a relationship isn't impossible and if you manage to make it work then that would be a very admirable thing as it would involve a great deal of mutual respect and patience.

I am totally getting my hands on one of them apprentices so that I may experience this uncomfortable entanglement of two very different parts of my life :D

Here are my thoughts, simply because I haven't been able to say them before!

I personally would advise against such intimacy while the apprenticeship is in place because it could cause issues. However, if both parties are consenting adults and fully understand the situation and its possible consequences, then there is nothing to physically stop things from happening. If there is a depth of connection, who are we to deny it being given a chance to blossom? And who are we to judge that what we might see as casual sex might not be based on something more.

Basically, it's none of our business what two people choose to do with their lives. As long as laws are abided by, there is no problem. Each one of us follows the guiding aspects of the Jedi path in our own way. Some drink, some smoke, some get angry, etc. But what is important is to try our best and to do what is appropriate for our own learning and development.

In most cases, I like to be guided by the phrase "an it harm none, do what ye will". If a relationship (of any kind - casual, married, etc) isn't harming anyone, then where's the problem? And to repeat myself (because I think it's important) - why would someone unconnected with the situation feel that they have the right to judge?

Heartland talked about this on Sunday. We came to the following conclusion-

We will not restrict anyone from having a relationship, however if one develops between a Master and Apprentice, the Apprenticeship will be terminated and the Apprentice reassigned, so that they can pursue their relationship and see where it goes.

If the situation is presented again (the Apprentice sleeps with another of their Masters, or the Master sleeps with another of their Apprentices) then an investigation on the seriousness of their commitment to the training will be launched and decided from there if either one should continue to have/be mentored.

Just a couple points on this question ...

1) We here are mostly adults with the exception of some minors. That being the case we should be able to judge for ourselves as to what is appropriate or not.

2) We never had a vow of abstinence. So what is stopping two consenting adults from entering any type of relationship.

3) With the last point you may say there is the chance of "special favors by way of being promoted without earning it." Well to that I say that is why we have transparency in training here. lessons are posted that are then verified by "another master" and then there is an interview conducted by another master. So I see no reason there would be a conflict.

4) If Master and apprentices are not allowed to have an intimate relationship then does that mean that I would not be capable or allowed to train my Wife when she is ready? As stated before that is why we have transparency in training.

Just my two cents take it as you will but this is my opinion and not official policy.

My first major was education and they stressed the importance of not doing this as it would be too easily representative of an abuse of trust. Teachers can go to jail or at the very least lose their jobs and all professional credibility. We, of course, stand to lose our spiritual credibility. When discussing this topic with my shirfu it was indicated that an intimate relationship is counter intuitive to the teaching process and also, a violation of trust. I am not going to say that no one else may do so because it is wrong. For all I know(or don't) it isn't wrong for them nor do I have the right to lay down rules on others behavior. But I will say that it would be wrong for me personally to involve myself as either a student or a teacher with the other on an intimate level and will not do it. To me it implies ignorance, selfish passion and a lack of control, a combination which can easily lead to the Dark side. The only exception I can possibly foresee is if my wife would like to join the path and, doubtful as this may be in my eyes, I would not accept her as an apprentice and would instead encourage her to go through the initiates training and apprentice selection via the usual process. Only if the Council ordered me too would I then take her as my student and until that apprenticeship ended I would drastically redefine our relationship too what I feel is more appropriate. I would also encourage my fellow Jedi to consider the slippery slope that we ourselves can develop by justifying impulses as the will of the Force. Our intuition is detrimental to our development when we choose to ignore what we've learned from history and what I consider common wisdom too have taught us.

Th issue with abuse of trust (with regular teachers, or doctors, etc) is that It really shouldn't concern us, because a Jedi unlike non-Jedi should be able to detach themselves from such worldly matters and remain unaffected by any feelings they may have. So really if you think your apprentice is hot (or as in Damion's example, your wife) you should be able to teach them just as well as anyone else.

    • Username and why we use them ? (Last post by soya)
    • I have used so many usernames, things relating to old gods, things from different myths, things from D&D and other games, even names that are just random gobblings of letters that seem to fit together, and are pronounceable in English. I've always wanted a different name, a different life. I never used my real name, because it isn't who I was, it was a name given by my father, because he wanted a little him, so he gave me his name, made me to learn his trade, and only allowed me to enjoy his enjoyments. I have been soya since the middle of 2006, a group of friends didn't like the name I had chosen for myself, so they got together and gave me a new name, more indicative of my personality. I still go by my real name in real life, I get asked if I made it up, or where it's from, what it means, why I changed my name (because it couldn't be something my parents gave me!), everything. I am currently attempting to take my name, make it me, really get people to go "Oh, you're ***?" and not speak about my father. In short, I use my username, because I do not feel a connection to my real name, but I'm trying to change that, and may change to my real name here, shortly, in the future.
    • How Many Heads Do You Have? (Last post by soya)
    • This is an interesting one, as it can be different for each person. I have my commonly accepted body and head, which exists in the commonly accepted universe that we all perceive. This body1 is what others base their models of me off of. I must also have my own model of this body1, which is called body2, inside body1. Now I have a mind1 inside of body1, and in order to perceive that mind1 I have to perceive mind1 which creates a model, which is mind2. Now can we really call mind2 a mind? It doesn't actually do any thinking, it's a mere model. Now onto how we observe our thoughts. I think I'm seeing this differently. I have mind1, it does all the actual thinking, processing, smelling, seeing, everything. When I want to "sit back and observe my thoughts" I don't leave mind1 and view it from mindB, I merely view the thought process of mind1, from within another part of mind1. When I go on a spiritual journey, again, I'm not leaving mind1 behind, and viewing everything from mindB, mindB doesn't exist for me, I merely continue using mind1, outside of brain1.

    • Ah, Quote: “If Jediism seeks to strive towards the same principles followed by the fictional Jedi, it's also fair to infer that other definitional aspects stem from the same source...” I see where the confusion has come from. We are not fictional Jedi from the wonderful Star Wars movies, neither are we role playing. Jediism is not the same as that which is portrayed within the Star Wars Saga by George Lucas and Lucasfilm LTD. George Lucas' Jedi are fictional characters that exist within a literary and cinematic universe. As stated on this page. http://www.templeofthejediorder.org/

    • I have been a healer for years. For as long as I can remember I have sought to help people. As a child I wanted to be a storm chaser, a spy, a doctor and for a time a priest. After a car accident involving a family member. I vowed to find a way to learn to save lives. To happen apon those on the brink and have the skills and abilities needed to reach out and return them to this life. This was a childs dream. However, those are the ones that motivate us the most. I went through a program in my high school called OEC (Opportunities in Emergency Care), I was trained as an EMT in high school. I worked a few jobs as an EMT, even as a Medical Officer, but soon I started working at a Trauma Center. I have been here for 9 years, I still volunteer my time on some services. However, I have found that the people in the field and in the ER have colored my experiences. Given me a vision of life that at times can bring an indescribable amount of joy, and equally indescribable pain and at times fear. That is my light, courage in the face of fear. Brought forth by pure will, by conviction and by the knowledge that what I do may be thankless at times, but I watch the differences I make happen. That... That lets me sleep very well at night.

    • All things considered, given the on-line nature of our community, we all seem to fade in and out from time to time. And given the nature of the rest of 'hyper-reality' in which we move, the fading out and in of even that, perhaps from (t)here to another (t)here perhaps, in time and on time ... A lot of it comes down to doing what we have to do, where we have to do it - in any 'here', on-line, in-line, as true representations or representations of truth - telling tales to ourselves in, of and on the information super-highway or the metaphysical motorway. :silly: Congratulations on your new flat, V ! Sort your internet amongst the sweaters and socks, type it all out in the tea-towels ... :cheer: When you get back in we'll be having a party. ;)

    • The Sith Academy! (Last post by Alaaric Jensen)
    • Yes RyuJin well said. I do believe that if they had any real power they would not be so open about themselves in the way that they are. They seem to allow their darkest secrets to unfold like a book. When they speak they do not sound confident. By all appearances they seem to be living out a fantasy but I never assume when I do not know. That is the best policy in my opinion. I am focusing my use of energy working and magic to heal. I want to create and not destroy. I believe that it is a waste of effort to use your abilities, or talents, whatever they may be, to hurt others. When I look at the philosophy of the Sith Academy, and then look at what my philosophy was before, I see that they are similar in essence, but they are both truly pointless. What is the purpose of domination? Conquest of that which already exists, to convert all of reality into your own image, it is a waste of time. What happens when, theoretically, all reality is under your control? Everything would conform with everything else. Everything would be the same but you are at a dead end. Where do you go from there? If you have nothing left to conquer or destroy then your motives have been exhausted. You no longer have a purpose. Creation however, is limitless, and there is no end to creating. All things that are created in this dimension must decay however, but more is created in place of what has departed, and I believe that most life reincarnates. Those who live only for domination or destruction lead an empty life. By remembering that emptiness I am inspired to keep struggling against my own temptations to fall back into that old life of self destruction.
