I've looked into religions such as Hinduism, and Buddhism. Is meditation really the key to well being? Is it some sort of super relaxing move such as Yoga, or Pilates? I believe so, in fact I believe more than that. I really think our ancestors might have finally found the key to the lock of the new pandemic of stress. Meditation is perhaps one of the best ways to relieve stress from certain situations. In this, I truly believe that we are lagging in what our Ancestors once gave us. So, maybe for your and whomever you love's health start meditating. Otherwise, you might just end up with a heart attack on your hands due to stress. So, PLEASE START MEDITATING.

I enjoy meditating and learning more about it. There are so many different forms out there, it's pretty exciting! The best part about it though is that, if done correctly, anything can be a meditation. Even your daily life. Once I found this out, I have never been happier and more stress free.

That's something I never learned though. I tried to look it up, but it was all the sitting meditation. Believe me, if anyone around my family caught you doing that, they'd make fun of you for doing so. You'd never hear the end of it.

I have found that some people need different kinds of meditation. Lets look at the definition of it.

Meditation
intransitive verb
1: to engage in contemplation or reflection
2: to engage in mental exercise (as concentration on one's breathing or repetition of a mantra) for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness
transitive verb
1: to focus one's thoughts on : reflect on or ponder over
2: to plan or project in the mind : intend, purpose

there are many ways. Walking meditation, sitting, laying, etc
(I have used this page as a good descriptor: http://www.spiritualnow.com/articles/20/1/The-Different-Types-of-Meditation/Page1.html)

The sitting down, theatrical meditation is that theatrical. I meditate once at day at least for 30 minutes at the end of my day. Sometimes I lay down, sometimes I do it at the gym, sometimes I sit and settle into a meditative state. People stare sometimes when they are visiting and are like, "what the?"

Sometimes my wife explains, sometimes I do after. Meditation is for you, by this self reflection and realization, you can improve yourself and therefore improve the world around you. If others can not accept you, then that is their problem. Not yours.

Well, I usually don't have much time to do that, plus as I've mentioned in the article my family would laugh me out of the house.

Close your eyes for 10 seconds. Pay attention to your breath.

Open your eyes.

This is called centering, and it's a great mid-action meditation tool. Just don't do it while driving. ;) hahahah.

Not a problem. It's such a useful tool. Meditation's MAIN goal is awareness. And, just stopping for ten measly seconds can bring such perspective.

I worked in several schools where everyone meditated in the morning before classes. We're talking high schools(both public and private). An interesting side effect was that we had zero violence. The kids were pretty mellow, not stressed out.

I guess meditation is one of many tools that help people.

Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts.

I enjoy meditation quite a bit. But I agree that it can be difficult when others are judging you. This is why i personally enjoy walking meditation. Reflection on thought while walking through nature seems to help my frame of mind a great deal and i enjoy being around nature and feeling all the energy around me flowing peacefully. Sometimes i listen to calming instrumental music and sometimes, when there aren't any people around to make noise, I simply listen to nature. I like to stop and sit to meditate for a while before I turn back to head home as at that point I am deep into nature and already calmed so I can experience deeper focus and introspection. Then I can walk home and ease myself back into life during the walk. These walks are generally fifteen minute to half an hour walks (one way) with half an hour to two hours of sitting meditation inbetween. This works very well for me.

If you watch even only a minute or so of this, skip to 9:16 onward, which I think is most important to understand about what meditation does for us.

"The scientific interest in meditation and mindfulness practice has recently seen an unprecedented surge. After an initial phase of presenting beneficial effects of mindfulness practice in various domains, research is now seeking to unravel the underlying psychological and neurophysiological mechanisms.

Advances in understanding these processes are required for improving and fine-tuning mindfulness-based interventions that target specific conditions such as eating disordersor attention deficit hyperactivity disorders.

This review presents a theoretical frame work that emphasizes the central role of attentional control mechanisms in the development of mindfulness skills. It discusses the phenomenological level of experience during meditation, the different attentional functions that are involved, and relates these to the brain networks that subserve these functions.

On the basis of currently available empirical evidence, specific processes as to how attention exerts its positive influence are considered and it is concluded that meditation practice appears to positively impact attentional functions by improving resource allocation processes.

As a result, attentional resources are allocated more fully during early processing phases which subsequently enhance further processing.

Neural changes resulting from a pure form of mindfulness practice that is central to most mindfulness programs are considered from the perspective that they constitute a useful reference point for future research. Furthermore, possible interrelations between the improvement of attentional control and emotion regulation skills are discussed."

Sitting isn't the only position for meditation.
Just on a chair, or park bench. Forget about
troubles. Most or every place around the world,
meditates.
